There will be voter registration at the event.
The #fourthofjulyweekend doesn’t hit the same when they’re gerrymandering away the Black vote, kidnapping our immigrant neighbors, destroying civilizations, messing with women’s suffrage and healthcare, denying trans people passports, desecrating the White House and national landmarks, disrespecting our public servants and the great treasure of our national parks. The list goes on.
The Democrats are going to take back Congress in November, with truly progressive candidates for the Senate and House where the people want them and they can get elected. We can’t take it for granted. We have to stay focused and fight for it.
For me and my friends, from Asheville to St Paul to Cincinnati, the days surrounding July 4 are going to be full of organizing and #resistance songs.
Big thanks to @rumbacafeoh and @celebrityetc for hosting us in #columbusohio, the state capital, on #IndependenceDay. @indivcentraloh will be there, registering voters and recruiting volunteers. @amyactonoh is leading a lot of polls to become Ohio’s first Democratic governor in 15 years. Three-term populist senator @sherrod is poised to slide over to Ohio’s other US Senate seat after Trump-backed MAGA multi-millionaire Bernie Moreno had beaten him in 2024. We’ll see how voters around Cincinnati and Toledo respond to the Republicans’ Trumpian redistricting of what are currently two Democratic seats in the House. The authoritarian manipulation of the democratic process doesn’t sit well with free-thinking people. #indivisible
I spent 1995-2000 in Ohio as a college kid and cub newspaper reporter. It was a very purple state for a long, long time, and I count my time there as an awakening from my naive Christian Right background to an awareness of feminism, LGBTQ rights and the role of the government in protecting the have-nots from the haves. I personally know a lot of Ohioans who want a government that works for the working many, not for the wealthy few. BIG GRATITUDE to everyone working to make that happen.
